Nice write mate.Would you tell where to get the transistor?Maybe even the model # so whoever get into this situation will get ahead sooner.

The Volvo part number for the transistor is 30864189-3. Next time I change the cabin filter (soon) I'll get the transistor component number so that some ambitious person can maybe swap the transistor itself out and save some $. Probably cost about $5 to $10.

sks40: thanks for the useful post - just wish I'd found it before I pulled the central fan control unit out and spent an hour or so trying to work out how it worked and what was wrong with it...turns out the problem was much simpler!
The transistors are MJ802 and 2SD525 but the latter is now obsolete. There are plenty of suitable replacements (I used MJE15028G but others will do fine). Getting the heatsink unit apart was a bit of a one-way operation so I had to use glue to put it back together. All done, tested and working - just waiting for the glue to dry before I bolt it all back into the car.
miscarmi00: you need to remove the glovebox then remove the bolts which attach the metal strut which runs along the base of where the glovebox attaches to the rest of the dash. One of these is under a little plastic tab on the door-side and the other is behind the section of carpet which covers the passenger-side of the centre console. The strut should now be loose enough to allow a screwdriver in there (you don't need to remove it completely)

those instruction dont make sense. why would you have to remove the entire blower motor to get to the transistor when it looks like you can just unscrew the two screws and pull it out. my question is, how do i get to the top screw. its impossible

You don't have to remove the blower motor - he just put those pics up there to show you which bit you need to get to (ringed in the photos).

alright, after pulling extremely hard and completely undoing the hex bolts on the sides, i managed to get the screw out and replaced the transistor.
THANKS!

any other thoughts?

sounds like your problem is the actual fan speed potentiometer solder joints. See the other how to on "possessed ac control"!!

Anyone happen to come across a new transistor for the HVAC that they wouldnt mind selling. A dealership quoted me at some $105 for the part number listed on here.
I thought I read somewhere about someone saying $85!!!! Let me know if anyone can help out, as I too hate being blasted with cold air at 8 in the morning! Thanks guys/girls.

There was another thread here on this problem. You can actually change the transistor for a few $ with one from Radio Shack or other electronic part store.
