How-to: Fix AC BLOWER FAN THAT RUNS HIGH ALL THE TIME (TRANSISTOR REPLACEMENT ONLY!!) Tue, 19 February 2008 17:10 Go to next message
This is the fix for the AC blower fan that runs on medium/high all the time even when the fan knob is turned to "0" (OFF).

So if you don't want to spend the 85$ for the new part this is the procedure to replace just the transistor which you can pick up at Radio Shack for 2.29$.
HEre's the link for the transistor;

http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=206261 4&cp=2032058.2032230.2032279&allCount=27&fbn=Typ e%2FTransistor&f=PAD%2FProduct+Type%2FTransistor&fbc =1&parentPage=family

Now keep in mind this is a cheapo Radio Shack transistor and you can get better ones, I'm going to run to Fry's sometime soon and find another one just in case this one decides to die on me sometime soon. If you've replaced your cabin filter you'll sort of know what it looks like under the dash panel...

Anyway, here's the pictures and writeup...

1. Remove panel under passenger side dash (under the glovebox) by removing two phillips head screws.

2. (Not entirely necessary but nice to have more room and see what's going on) Remove glovebox door by removing two phillips head screws located underneath glovebox door (right by where the panel was held in place) and slide glove box out and lay on driver seat.
http://s40concepts.net/forum/index.php?t=getfile&id=15072

3. Unplug transistor assembly and remove two phillips head screws holding transistor assembly in place (the part circled in red) The top screw is a bit of a pain in the @$$ to get to but you can get to it.
http://s40concepts.net/forum/index.php?t=getfile&id=15073

TIP:If you have to remove the three phillips screws holding the plastic dash to the steel bar that makes it a bit difficult to remove the transistor assembly, I did this to pull on it and bend it a bit for better clearance when removing and installing the transistor assembly.

This is what it will look like once the transistor assembly is removed, notice it's directly next to the cabin filter.
http://s40concepts.net/forum/index.php?t=getfile&id=15074

When the transistor assembly is pulled out it'll be filthy and full or dust and dirt so clean it off nicely for good heat dissipation.

Here's the dash with the glovebox door pulled out...
http://s40concepts.net/forum/index.php?t=getfile&id=15075

4. Carefully remove two phillips head screws, lockwashers, and nuts holding transistor to transistor assembly. The piece is sort of adhered to the heatsink with a bunch of heat transfer grease. On the backside remove two wires attached to the transistor, if they are like mine were they're just held to the leads of the transistor with ferrels and nothing else.
http://s40concepts.net/forum/index.php?t=getfile&id=15076

Here is the actual MJ802 transistor that was installed in my unit.
http://s40concepts.net/forum/index.php?t=getfile&id=15077

5. Attach new transistor to heatsink with two phillips head screws, lock washers, and nuts. (If you have heat transfer grease rub it under the new transistor so it makes good contact between the transistor and the heatsink!)

6. Cut shrink tubing to appropriate length and put over wires, solder wires to leads of transistor (bend leads to reach nicely if necessary but be careful not to short them to the heatsink!!!!!), use a heatgun to shrink tubing.

And you're ready to reinstall. Be sure to plug it in first and check to make sure your problem has gone away before you bolt everything up together and then find out something went wrong somewhere!!

More pics of the transistor assembly.

Sweeet! I registered just to say thanks. My '01 just developed this problem and I was searching around for a fix. Thank you so much for writing this up.

What does step 6 mean? Is it necessary to do?

What a great description of the job, and excellent photos! I have registered just to say thanks. I'm in the UK and my 2002 S40 suddenly started running the ventilation fan at max speed all the time. Very tiring on long journeys, and it makes conversation or listening to the radio harder work.

I picked up two replacement 2N3055 transistors on Ebay for £2.75 including postage. I followed this procedure exactly and it worked like a charm. My only comments are that I could undo the two crosshead screws that secure the heatsink assembly without too much trouble but I had to use brute force to bend the metal bar a little so that I could slide out the heatsink. I didn't remove the plastic panel above it to do this, and I could bend it back into place easily afterwards.

I didn't have any shrink tubing so I retained the original sleeves, and after soldering the two wires onto the new transistor I just slid them down the wire to cover the bare soldered conductors. Now my ventilation fan works properly again.

I estimate this took me about 45 minutes from start to finish, possibly slower than many people but I'm not a mechanic or auto-electrician and I'm 6 foot 5 inches tall so I found working upside down in the passenger footwell extremely uncomfortable!

Because I bought two on Ebay I now have a surplus brand new 2N3055 transistor so in a community spirit I will mail this free of charge to the first person in the UK who experiences the same problem (email: stourton at hotmail dot com).

I registered for this site just to say thanks for this info- hope to be a contributor here to!

I had this problem with the fan blowing all the time at medium. We followed this how-to and it fixed the problem! I had a tough time getting the second screw out to remove the Transistor assembly UNTIL... I remembered that any tool can be the right tool and got out my drill! I drilled a hole large enough to fit the screw driver in. The screw head seems to be smaller in size than the bottom screw so you may need to use a different driver (I did). I switched the screws around when I put them back in since it was easier to do. The hole will be covered by the glovebox when its re-installed and causes no problems. Be careful and dont push to hard when drilling so that you only drill through the metal bar and dont slam in the top of the transistor assembly.

I cant thank you enough for this how-to. Great job!

Impressive job, congratulations, is a great help to have all these explanations. I have this problem and the cost of repair here in Spain is 200 ¤, approximately $ 300!

Thank you very much to Carlos

This was perfect. I have never soldered before but I got the job done. Thanks so much for the detailed how to...

One suggestion... I had to bend the metal frame in order to get the resistor out of the car. It does not hut anything..
