How to clean your Idle Air Control valve (IAC) Thu, 27 July 2006 00:11 Go to next message
First, you need one of this can. $2.99 at your local part store of your choice (autozone,schucks/krager,pep boys, thrifty)

Locate your TB cover.

Using a philip screw driver and hex tool to remove the cover.

Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the first bolt.

There is another one on the bottom. (When reinstall, put the bottom bolt in first but don't tighten it like in this picture. Then you bolt the top one in afterward. This way, you'll won't have to trying to locate and position the bottom bolt in afterward as it is very tight clearance in this area)

Unclip one side of the connector to the AIC.

Using a small flat screwdriver to lift the plastic tab up so you can unclip the connector free from the AIC.

Now, spray mofo out of two inside housing until your sastisfy. Twisted Evil

very nice write up...will rough idling be the only symptom of a dirty AIC valve? will a dirty AIC rob hp?

Ding Ding Ding.....also, incorrect gap plug will give you rough idle. No, it doesn't do anything w/ hp as it's only relate to *idle* process. See MAF how-to for hp.

My wife has braces on her teeth and she has these little brushes that are flexible... after spraying the gunk a few times to soften it I used the brush to agitate it. it was small enough to flex to the bottom side of the valve and get everything sparkly clean.

Between the throttle body and the IAC i used a full can of cleaner.

Just be careful if you decide to open the poppet and clean the sealing faces Rolling Eyes

Also, check out the 5 sided "allen wrench' plug they use on the end of that casting, I've never seen anything quite like it.

I just finished cleaning my AIC and TB today on both my car and my cousin's car. Her car has been having problems, so we're going to work on it more today. I will post pictures when I'm done.

Her car had 90k miles and it was really dirty. Mine wasn't that dirty at all at 40k. I haven't test driven either car so I can't comment yet on any benefit from the cleaning.

I just want to point out though, that everything was exactly as Warren said on my cousin's car (a phase 2), but on mine, which is a phase 1, the bolts holding the AIC in place needed an allen wrench to remove, not a 10 mm socket. I don't know if this applies to all phase ones, but I just wanted to point it out.
